What is "True Cost?"

A Moving Experience (Towards Conservation & Efficiency)

If you are thinking of moving (either buying or renting), consider downsizing and/or higher density. The smaller the home, the less energy it takes to heat & cool it, to say nothing about reduced maintenance overall. Choosing a high-density unit, especially closer to an urban core, creates enormous savings in upkeep with shared walls, etc. Furthermore, you normally drive shorter distances plus being handy to public transportation.

The Livable Communities Committee leads a Challenge to Sprawl Campaign that works to fight poorly planned runaway development and promotes smart growth.

Sprawl Campaign

Poorly planned development threatens our environment, our health, and our quality of life in numerous ways. Sprawl spreads development out over large amounts of land; puts long distances between homes, stores, and job centers; and makes people more and more dependent on driving in their daily lives.

Dense neighborhoods are the opposite of sprawl. At densities high enough to provide many nearby destinations, you can walk or take public transit. You meet neighbors and visitors, and enjoy their neighborhoods, cultures, traditions and festivals. Our best cities are improving public transit, calming traffic to enhance walking and bicycling, and removing freeways.

The Healthy Growth Calculator is designed to explore the consequences to your community of your decisions, and their fairness to all residents including those who can no longer drive, or those who would rather walk or take public transit for some trips.
